#OOTD: A popular social media hashtag where people showcase their "Outfit of the Day". The hashtag is useful for fashion bloggers who wish to share their own unique style.
Kanye West: An American hip hop recording artist, songwriter, record producer, fashion designer, entrepreneur, and world-renowned narcissist.
#OOTD is an unfinished piece of polyester chiffon measuring 57" x 216" with a repeated screen grab of a Kanye West tweet in which he declares, "You have distracted from my creative process". This fabric was printed entirely on accident and yet somehow became the most poetically perfect representation of our globalized economy. I intended to print the design for my digital sari project and worked with a company based in New York and Georgia with production based in Shanghai. Their website interface did not have the capability of uploading a file as large as mine, so I had to work with customer service directly where I was told to upload a bogus image (the Kanye tweet) in order to pay for my order and DropBox my actual file to the company directly. The representative from Georgia then forwarded my file and my instructions to their production facility in Shanghai, China where some information was quite literally lost in translation. Fast-forward to two weeks later when I received a package that had been overnighted to me from Shanghai. Opening this package revealed six yards of polyester chiffon that I did not order.
Why is this important?
I intended to create an art piece that connected my identity as an Indian-American to my digital "culture". As seamless as our digital world seemed to me, I had ignored a major factor: human glitch in a global economy. Without the technology available to us today, it would be impossible for a single company to be spread out between three nodes to produce a one piece of fabric.
All in all it turns out Kanye was correct. I had been distracted from my creative process.
